Are backyard fire pits worth it?
A backyard fire pit gets used more than almost any other outdoor feature we build. Once you've got one, it changes how often you actually go out into the yard — most clients tell us they end up out there several nights a week from spring through fall. It becomes the gathering spot for everything from quiet evenings with a coffee to summer nights with friends and family.
How late in the year can you use a fire pit in Michigan?
In West Michigan, a well-built fire pit easily stretches your outdoor season from early spring into late fall, and on calmer winter nights plenty of people still get use out of theirs. The cool evenings around here are exactly the conditions where a fire feels best — comfortable enough to sit out, cool enough that the warmth from the fire is the whole point. A few extra months of usable outdoor time every year is the real return.
What kind of fire pit is best for a backyard?
We build both wood-burning and gas fire pits using stone, brick, and natural fieldstone that ties into the rest of your hardscaping. Wood-burning is the traditional experience — actual flame, the smell of a real fire, no ignition switch needed. Gas runs cleaner, lights instantly, and lets you enjoy a fire without dealing with wood storage or the next-morning cleanup. Some clients have us build both into the same yard for different uses.
Do I need a permit for a fire pit in Grand Rapids?
Permit requirements depend on the city or township. Most permanent wood-burning fire pits are fine without a permit as long as they meet local size and setback rules from structures and property lines. Gas fire pits typically do need a permit because of the gas line connection. We know what the local jurisdictions across Kent and Ottawa counties look for and handle the permitting paperwork when it's needed.
