Outdoor Fireplaces Built for West Michigan Living

An outdoor fireplace changes everything about how you use your backyard. Not gonna lie — in Michigan, it's the difference between a three-season patio and a space you actually use in October and November. Sometimes even December if you're tough enough.

We build outdoor fireplaces from real stone and brick. Not the prefab metal boxes with stone veneer slapped on them. Ours have proper footings, firebrick-lined fireboxes, and masonry chimneys that draw correctly so smoke goes up, not in your face.

Every outdoor fireplace we build starts 42 inches below grade with a reinforced concrete footing. That's below the frost line in West Michigan. We've seen outdoor fireplaces from other builders that heaved and cracked after one winter because they skimped on the foundation.

We offer both wood-burning and gas options. Wood-burning fireplaces give you that authentic crackling fire experience. Gas fireplaces start with a switch and don't require wood storage. Some clients go with gas logs in a wood-burning firebox — best of both worlds.

Our outdoor fireplaces serve homeowners in Grand Rapids, Ada, Forest Hills, East Grand Rapids, Cascade, Rockford, and across the lakeshore. Whether you want a rustic fieldstone fireplace or a clean-lined modern design, we'll build it to last.

How We Build Your Outdoor Fireplace

1

Design Consultation

We visit your property, discuss your vision and fuel preferences, and design a fireplace that fits your outdoor space and complements your home's style.

2

Foundation Work

We excavate below the frost line and pour a reinforced concrete footing sized for your fireplace. This is the most important step — it prevents heaving and cracking.

3

Masonry Construction

We build the firebox with proper firebrick, construct the chimney with correct flue sizing, and install the stone or brick exterior. Every course is level and plumb.

4

Finishing Details

We install the mantel, cap the chimney, add any gas connections, and build integrated features like wood storage boxes or seating walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an outdoor fireplace cost?

Outdoor fireplace costs depend on size, stone selection, and features. A basic stone fireplace with a simple chimney starts in the mid-range and goes up from there for larger designs with seating walls, mantels, and pizza ovens. We provide detailed estimates after seeing your space.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor fireplace?

Most municipalities in the Grand Rapids area require permits for outdoor fireplaces with chimneys. We handle the permitting process and make sure the design meets local building codes and setback requirements.

Wood-burning or gas — which is better?

Depends on how you'll use it. Wood-burning gives you the real fire experience — the crackle, the smell, the ambiance. Gas is convenient — flip a switch and you have flames. Some of our clients install gas logs in a wood-burning firebox so they have both options.

Can you build an outdoor fireplace on an existing patio?

Sometimes, but it depends on what's underneath. Fireplaces are heavy and need their own foundation below the frost line. If your patio has a proper base, we can often integrate the fireplace foundation adjacent to it without tearing everything up.

How long does it take to build an outdoor fireplace?

Most outdoor fireplaces take 2-3 weeks from foundation to finish. Weather can extend that — we won't lay mortar in freezing temps. Planning ahead and booking early in the season helps avoid weather delays.
