Depends on how you'll use it. Wood-burning gives you the real fire experience — the crackle, the smell, the ambiance. Gas is convenient — flip a switch and you have flames. Some of our clients install gas logs in a wood-burning firebox so they have both options.

If your patio has a solid base, we can often pour the fireplace foundation adjacent to it without tearing everything up. We assess the site first.

Very little. Sweep out the ash after a burn, have the firebox and chimney inspected periodically, reseal the stone or brick when the surface starts looking dry, and cover the opening or use a chimney cap to keep weather out. Done right, that's about all it asks.
