Where Does a Tile Backsplash Belong?

Why does the right backsplash make such a difference?

A clean tile backsplash makes a kitchen feel finished. Whether it's a simple white subway run, a full-height marble-look slab behind the range, or a glass mosaic behind a basement bar, the backsplash is one of the most-noticed surfaces in the room. We install backsplash tile across Grand Rapids and West Michigan in kitchens, wet bars, laundry rooms, behind bathroom sinks, and other water-resistant areas — places where a tile surface is easier to wipe down than paint.

Where can a tile backsplash actually go?

Backsplash tile belongs anywhere you'd rather have a wipeable, durable surface than painted drywall — kitchen counter walls, behind a range or cooktop, behind a wet bar, behind a laundry room sink, and in similar splash zones. We don't take on shower pans, tub surrounds, or full wet-area installations. Backsplash work is its own category: water-resistant, but not a fully waterproofed wet area.

What types of backsplash tile do you install?

We work with subway tile, marble-look porcelain, ceramic, glass mosaic, natural stone, and large-format porcelain slabs. The tile you choose changes the feel of the room — a herringbone subway pattern reads classic and warm, while a single large slab behind the cooktop reads modern and minimal. We bring samples to your home so you can see how the tile reads against your existing cabinets and counters before you commit.

What does a quality backsplash install include?

A good backsplash install is more than just sticking tile to drywall. We level the wall, set tile dead-flat with leveling clips, plan the cuts so they land in inconspicuous spots, and finish edges cleanly with bullnose, metal trim, or a similar profile. Backsplash work also coordinates well with a kitchen tile installation if you're updating the floor at the same time, or with a tile accent wall if you want to extend the backsplash into a feature wall.

Can backsplash tile be installed any time of year?

Backsplash installation is entirely indoor work, so it can be scheduled any time of year. Most kitchen backsplashes take one to two days from start to finish, depending on the layout and tile choice. Larger full-height installations or wet bars may take a day longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install backsplash in showers or tub surrounds?

No. We focus on water-resistant areas like kitchen backsplashes, wet bars, laundry rooms, and similar splash zones. Shower pans, tub surrounds, and other fully waterproofed wet areas need specialized waterproofing work that we don't take on. If that's what you need, we'd recommend hiring a contractor who specializes in wet-area installations.

What rooms can a tile backsplash go in?

Anywhere you'd benefit from a wipeable, durable surface that's better than painted drywall. The most common spots are kitchen counter walls, behind ranges and cooktops, wet bars, laundry rooms above the sink, and bathroom vanity walls. Anywhere it sees splashes but isn't a fully wet area like a shower.

Should the backsplash go all the way to the ceiling?

It depends on the look you're after. A full-height backsplash from counter to ceiling, especially behind the range, makes the kitchen feel taller and gives one continuous surface that's easy to wipe down. Stopping at the upper cabinets is the more traditional look. Both work — we'll help you decide based on your kitchen layout.

What tile is best for a kitchen backsplash?

Marble-look porcelain is one of the most popular choices we install in the Grand Rapids area. It handles heat from the cooktop, shrugs off cooking splatters, and cleans up easily. Subway tile and large-format porcelain slabs are also strong choices depending on the look you want.

Can tile backsplash installation be done any time of year?

Yes. Backsplash installation is entirely indoor work. Thinset and grout cure best at normal indoor temperatures, so weather is never a factor.

How long does a backsplash installation take?

A typical kitchen backsplash takes one to two days. Full-height installations or larger wet bar projects may take a third day. We'll give you an exact timeline before we start.

Should I install the backsplash before or after countertops?

Countertops go in first. The backsplash sits right on top of the countertop edge, so the counters need to be in place for a clean finished look. We'll coordinate timing with your countertop installer.

Can a kitchen backsplash tile be installed over existing tile?

Sometimes yes, but with important caveats. Tiling over existing tile adds depth to the wall, which can create clearance issues with outlets, switches, cabinet hardware, and the countertop overhang. We assess whether the existing tile is firmly bonded, if the additional depth is workable, and whether removal is actually the cleaner approach. We give you an honest assessment during the consultation.

What is the best way to clean a tile backsplash?

Most tile backsplashes clean easily with a damp cloth or sponge and a mild cleaner. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on polished tile and glass mosaic. Grout lines may need occasional attention with a soft brush. If grout is sealed — which we do after every installation — everyday kitchen splatter wipes up without staining the joints.
