Is It Worth Remodeling a Brick Fireplace?

Is it worth remodeling an old fireplace?

A dated brick or builder-grade fireplace can drag down an otherwise beautiful living room, and most homeowners feel it before they can put their finger on what's wrong. A fireplace remodel is one of the highest-impact projects you can do without touching the rest of the room — new surround, new hearth, sometimes a full floor-to-ceiling rebuild — and the room reads completely differently afterward. For older homes especially, it's usually money well spent.

Does updating a fireplace really change how a room looks?

The fireplace is almost always the focal point of the room it sits in. Once you change the surround material, the hearth shape, or the height of the stone or stack, the rest of the furniture and finishes seem to fall in line behind it. We've remodeled 1970s brick walls into clean stacked-stone features, builder-grade slips into custom natural stone, and original masonry surrounds back into something true to the home. We also build basement fireplaces and below-grade surrounds when a finished basement needs the same treatment.

What's included in a fireplace remodel?

A fireplace remodel can be as light or as full as you want. Stone or tile veneer overlays change the surface without touching the firebox. A hearth extension changes the shape and proportion. Mantel work adds the warmth a flat surround is missing. A floor-to-ceiling rebuild ties the fireplace into the rest of the wall and the ceiling for a true centerpiece. We mix natural stone, manufactured stone veneer, brick, and tile fireplace refacing depending on the look. An indoor stone veneer accent wall on a nearby wall ties the room together when the fireplace gets a stone update.

Can stone veneer be installed over existing brick?

In most cases, yes — stone or tile veneer can go right over existing brick once the surface has been prepped properly, and you skip the demolition and dust of a full tear-out. The exceptions are when the existing masonry has structural issues or when the surround geometry needs to change. We take a look in person and tell you which approach actually makes sense for your fireplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install stone veneer over existing brick?

In most cases, yes. Stone veneer can be applied directly over structurally sound brick after proper preparation. This approach avoids the disruption of removing the existing brick. We assess your specific fireplace to determine the best approach.

Should I paint my brick fireplace or refinish it with stone or tile?

Painting is the cheapest option, but it's a one-way decision — once brick is painted, getting back to the original look is very difficult and rarely clean. Refacing with stone veneer, thin brick, or tile completely changes the appearance without that long-term commitment, and you end up with a more durable, higher-end finish. For most homeowners we work with, refacing is the better-looking and more permanent choice. We can show you both directions during your consultation so you can compare.

How long does a fireplace remodel take?

Most fireplace remodels take 3-7 days of work time, depending on complexity. Simple veneer applications may be completed faster, while extensive redesigns with structural changes take longer. We provide realistic timelines and minimize disruption to your home.

Will my fireplace still work during the remodel?

You typically cannot use the fireplace during the remodel. Dust, debris, and wet materials need time to cure properly. We recommend scheduling fireplace remodels during warmer months when you won't need the fireplace for heating.

What's better for a fireplace - natural stone or manufactured?

Both are excellent choices. Natural stone offers unique character and prestige, while manufactured stone provides more consistent colors and easier installation. Design preferences, aesthetic goals, and style of the room all factor into the decision. We help you choose the best option for your specific project.

Can I remodel my fireplace year-round?

Yes. Fireplace remodeling is indoor work, so weather does not affect the schedule. Your home stays at the right temperature for mortar and adhesive to cure properly.

Can you install a fireplace in my basement?

Yes. We build basement fireplace surrounds with stone, brick, or natural stone. Gas fireplaces can vent through a side wall, so you do not need a full chimney. A basement fireplace adds warmth and a nice focal point to your finished lower level.

What indoor fireplace options do you offer beyond the living room?

We build and remodel fireplaces in bedrooms, home offices, finished basements, and dining rooms. Stone and thin brick surrounds work in any room. Basement fireplaces are very popular in West Michigan because they turn a cold lower level into a cozy space during our long winters.
