What's the Difference Between Stone Masonry and Stone Veneer?

What is traditional stone masonry and why does the craft still matter?

Stone masonry is one of the oldest building crafts on earth, and honestly, the fundamentals haven't changed that much. You still need someone who understands how stone behaves, how to read its grain, and how to lay courses that lock together structurally. Tools have improved, but the skill is the same.

What kinds of projects actually use stone masonry?

We do stone masonry work across the full range — from thin stone veneer installations to full-thickness structural stone walls. Natural stone brings a warmth and permanence to buildings that manufactured materials can't match. Each stone is different, and working with that variation is what separates a mason from a laborer.

What does a real stone wall add to a home?

In West Michigan, stone masonry shows up everywhere: fieldstone foundations on hundred-year-old farmhouses, limestone facades on Heritage Hill mansions, stone fireplaces in Lake Michigan cottages, and modern stone accent walls on new construction in Ada and Forest Hills.

What's the best stone for masonry work?

We work with limestone, granite, fieldstone, bluestone, sandstone, and other natural stones depending on the project. Each has different properties — some are better for weight-bearing walls, others for thin veneers. We help you choose the right stone for both aesthetics and structural requirements.

What makes setting stone different from laying brick or block?

What makes stone masonry different from other trades is the patience and eye it requires. You can't rush fitting natural stone. Each piece needs to be selected, positioned, sometimes trimmed, and set so it locks with its neighbors. A good stone wall has very little mortar showing — the stones do the work.

Our Stone Masonry Process

1

Consultation & Stone Selection

We discuss your project, review stone options, and help you select the right type, color, and cut for the application. We bring samples or visit stone yards together.

2

Foundation & Preparation

We build the appropriate foundation — concrete footings for structural walls, masonry ties and scratch coat for veneer applications. Proper preparation is everything in stone work.

3

Stone Setting

Our masons select and set each stone individually, building courses that interlock structurally and look natural. We maintain proper bond patterns and mortar joints throughout.

4

Finishing

We tool mortar joints to the desired profile, clean stone faces, install cap stones, and apply sealer if appropriate. The finished work should look like it belongs there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between full stone masonry and stone veneer?

Full-thickness stone masonry uses thick, structural stones that actually carry load. Stone veneer is much thinner and is attached to an existing wall surface for aesthetics only. Both use real natural stone. Full masonry provides structural strength, while veneer delivers the look with less weight.

How long does it take to build a stone wall?

It depends on the wall type and length. Dry-stacked decorative walls go faster than mortared structural walls. Stone fireplace builds typically run several days to a couple of weeks. Large structural stone walls take longer because each stone has to be selected and fitted individually — there's no shortcut. Stone masonry is slower than brick or block by design. That hand-fitting is exactly where the craftsmanship and the look come from, and it's why a real stone wall doesn't look like anything else.

Can you match stone on an existing building?

In most cases, yes. We source stone from regional quarries and suppliers and have experience matching color, texture, and cut patterns. For historic buildings, we go the extra mile to find stone that blends with the original construction. A perfect match depends on what's available, but we get very close.

How long does natural stone last?

Properly installed natural stone masonry lasts for generations — literally. Stone buildings from the Roman era are still standing. In Michigan, the mortar joints will eventually need maintenance, but the stone itself is essentially permanent.

How does stone masonry compare to brick?

Natural stone is a more labor-intensive material because each stone must be individually selected and fitted — there are no uniform units like brick. However, stone adds more visual impact and perceived property value than most other masonry options. For many homeowners, the result speaks for itself.
