How to Winterize Your Outdoor Kitchen for Michigan Winters

Michigan winters bring months of freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and ice that can damage unprotected outdoor kitchens. Proper winterization takes just a few hours and protects the craftsmanship and materials you have put into your outdoor space. Our outdoor kitchen clients receive a detailed winterization guide with every installation.

The most critical step is draining all water lines. Any water left in pipes, faucets, or supply lines will freeze and expand, cracking pipes and fittings. Shut off the water supply at the main valve, then open all faucets and drain valves to let water flow out completely. Use compressed air to blow out any remaining water in the lines.

Appliances need thorough cleaning and protection. Remove all food residue from grills, burners, and refrigerators. Disconnect and store propane tanks in a ventilated area. Install fitted covers designed for each appliance to shield against snow, ice, and moisture.

Stone and masonry surfaces benefit from a fall cleaning and sealing. Apply a breathable penetrating sealer to countertops and stone veneer to prevent moisture absorption during freeze-thaw cycles. Our team can recommend the right products for your specific stone type and ensure proper application.

Gas line safety is essential. Turn off the gas supply valve and cap any exposed connections. If your kitchen uses a natural gas line, have a licensed plumber verify the shutoff is secure. For propane systems, disconnect tanks and store them upright in a sheltered location away from the house.

Cover the entire kitchen structure with breathable, weather-resistant covers. Avoid plastic tarps that trap moisture, as condensation under plastic causes more damage than exposure to air. Canvas or commercial-grade outdoor kitchen covers allow moisture to escape while blocking snow and ice. For related winter maintenance tips, read our guide on winter chimney care in Michigan.

When spring arrives, use our spring masonry inspection checklist to assess your outdoor kitchen for any winter damage. Reconnect utilities, clean surfaces, and inspect stone and mortar joints before firing up the grill for the first time.
