Masonry Columns That Make a Statement

Masonry columns are one of those details that elevate a property from nice to impressive. Flanking a driveway entrance, supporting a porch roof, anchoring a garden gate, or holding up a pergola — columns add weight and permanence that wood or metal just can't match.

We build columns from brick, natural stone, and block with stone veneer. Each material gives a different look. Brick columns tie in with traditional Michigan homes. Stone columns bring a natural, estate-like feel. Block cores with stone veneer give you the stone appearance with a more economical structure.

Every column we build sits on a reinforced concrete footing below the frost line — 42 inches in West Michigan. Inside, we install a steel rebar cage and fill the core with grout. This isn't just a stack of bricks — it's a reinforced masonry structure that handles lateral wind loads and vertical weight.

Mailbox pillars are one of our most popular column projects. A well-built brick or stone mailbox pillar at your driveway entrance is a small investment that makes a big first impression. We install the mailbox hardware, lighting options, and address numbers as part of the project.

We build masonry columns throughout Grand Rapids, Ada, Forest Hills, East Grand Rapids, Cascade, and the surrounding area. Driveway entrance columns, porch columns, fence pier columns, gate pillars — whatever column project you have in mind.

Our Column Construction Process

1

Design & Planning

We discuss column size, style, material, and placement. We consider the load requirements if the columns will support a structure and plan the rebar and footing accordingly.

2

Footing Installation

We excavate below the frost line and pour a reinforced concrete footing. We install rebar dowels that extend up into the column core for continuous reinforcement.

3

Column Building

We build the column course by course — each one checked for level and plumb. We fill the core with grout around the rebar cage and install any embedded hardware along the way.

4

Cap & Finishing

We install stone or precast cap on top, integrate mailbox hardware or lighting if applicable, tool all mortar joints, and clean the finished column.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a masonry mailbox pillar cost?

Mailbox pillar costs depend on size, material, and features. A standard brick mailbox pillar with a simple cap is our most affordable column project. Stone pillars with lighting and address numbers cost more. We provide free estimates for your specific design preferences.

How deep do column footings need to be?

In West Michigan, column footings must go below the 42-inch frost line. We typically pour footings 48 inches deep to provide extra margin. The footing size depends on the column's load — decorative columns need less than structural columns supporting a roof.

Can you match my home's existing brick for columns?

Yes. We source brick from manufacturers and suppliers to match your home's color, texture, and size as closely as possible. For exact matches on older homes, we may use salvaged brick from the same era. The mortar color is custom-mixed to match as well.

How long does it take to build masonry columns?

A pair of driveway entrance columns typically takes 3-5 days including the footing. Larger columns supporting structures may take longer. The footing needs to cure before we build on it, which adds a day or two depending on weather.

Do masonry columns need maintenance?

Very little. Inspect mortar joints every few years and repoint if needed. Cap stones should be checked to make sure they're still shedding water properly. If your columns are sealed, re-sealing every 5-10 years keeps them looking fresh. Otherwise, masonry columns are extremely low-maintenance.
